Blog Description

A new rosary devotion to Mary's pondering heart, derived from the Church's Liturgy of the Hours.
The Florilegium is a scriptural rosary like the Angelus, with a verse of scripture for each Hail Mary.
There is a Mystery of the Lord for each day of the week, and a Florilegium of verses for each liturgical season:
the Florilegium Joyful in Ordinary Time; the Florilegium Sorrowful for Lent and Advent;
and the Florilegium Glorious for Easter, Christmas, & Feastdays.

General Principles for the Restoration and Promotion of the Sacred Liturgy (I.1,V)

The Sacred Liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed.
It is also the fount from which all her power flows.
Thus the goal of apostolic endeavor is that all who are made children of God by faith and baptism
should come together to praise God in the midst of his Church,
to take part in the Sacrifice and eat the Lord’s Supper.
From the Liturgy, therefore, and especially from the Eucharist,
grace is poured forth upon us as from a fountain,
and the sanctification of men in Christ and the glorification of God,
to which all other activities of the Church are directed as towad their end,
are achieved with maximum efficacy.

The spiritual life, however, is not limited to solely participation in the Liturgy.
Popular devotions of the Christian people are to be highly recommended,
provided they conform to the laws and norms of the Church, and especially where ordered by the Apostolic See.
But such devotions should be so drawn up that they harmonize with the liturgical seasons,
accord with the Sacred Liturgy, are in some way derived from it and lead the people back to it,
since in fact the Liturgy by its very nature is far superior.

The Florilegium of the Heart originates in this call of the Second Vatican Council to derive devotions of the Catholic faithful from the Sacred Liturgy. The Rosary originated in the Middle Ages in just such a desire of the faithful. Wishing to imitate the chanting in the churches of the Liturgy of the Hours, the laity began to pray an Ave for each of the 150 psalms of the Psalter, the heart of the Divine Office. They called it Mary's Psalter at first. The Hail Mary consisted at the time only of the two verses from Luke. To these scriptural verses the devotion of the faithful added praises or petitions of Mary and Jesus, one for each bead of the rosaries with which they kept count, and in time these developed into the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

Inspired anew by the renewed Liturgy of the Hours comes now this new rosary devotion—or rather both new and old—out of the treasure of Mary’s pondering heart, that blessed heart which was predestined to keep the mystery of Christ as its first and perpetual witness. Three seasonal florilegia of scripture verses gather from the Liturgy of the Hours its most moving verses and arrange them for meditation on the beads of the rosary in a weekly cycle of seven Mysteries of the Lord and a liturgical cycle of seasons Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Fed by these streams of scriptures flowing from the Sacred Liturgy, may the Blessed Mother’s rosarium blossom anew in the hearts of her faithful. May this New Rosary Florilegium be more than ever Mary’s Psalter, for the faithful to unite with her in contemplating the Word of God.

By the seed of God's Word sown by the Church in her Sacred Liturgy,
and by the dew of his Holy Spirit,
may God give the growth to this Florilegium of Mary's Heart
in the hearts of her faithful.

as well as on the Douay-Rheims, adapted to modern usage and updated consulting current translations.
