SCRIPTURAL READINGS
From the Mass of Ordination
FROM THE SECOND LETTER OF PAUL OF TIMOTHY (1:1-14)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus
by the will of God, for the promise of life in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my
dear child.
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our
Lord.
I remind you to stir into flame
the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did
not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather of power and love and
self-control. Therefore do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord—nor of
me, a prisoner for his sake—but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with
the strength that comes from God.
God saved us and called us to a
holy life, not according to our works, but according to his own design and the
grace he bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began—a grace now made
manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death
and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Of this Gospel I
was appointed preacher and apostle and teacher.
On this account I am suffering;
but I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed, and I am
confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until his day.
Take as your norm the sound words
that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus, and
guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.
Vs. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Of this Gospel I am become a
minister by the gift of God’s grace,
which was given to me by the
working of his power:
By the grace of God I am what I
am.
Rs. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs. God set me apart from my mother’s womb
and called me by his grace.
Rs. By the grace of God I am what I am.
Rs. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs. Of this Gospel I am become a minister by the
gift of God’s grace,
which was given to me by the
working of his power.
Rs. By the grace of God I am what I am.
FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF ST. PETER (5:1)
Now as myself a presbyter, I exhort the presbyters among you to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you do—nor for sordid gain, but from the heart.
Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be a pattern to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will win the unfading crown of glory
In the same way, you younger
clergy, be subject to the presbyters. All of you must clothe yourselves with
humility in your dealings with one another, for God opposes the proud, but
gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of
God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him,
because he cares for you.
Discipline yourselves, and keep
alert. Like a roaring lion, your adversary the devil prowls around, seeking
whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your
brethren throughout the world undergo the same affliction. And after you have
suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his
eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore you, strengthen you, and
establish you. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.
I have written you this short
letter through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother to you, to exhort
you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
Your sister church in Babylon,
chosen along with you, sends greetings; and so does my son Mark.
Greet one another with a holy
kiss. Peace to all of you who are in
Christ.
Vs. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Be an example among the faithful
in love, in faith, in purity.
For in doing this you will save
both yourself and your hearers.
Rs. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs. Meditate on these things and be wholly in
these things.
Rs. For in doing this you will save both yourself
and your hearers.
Rs. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs. Be an example among the faithful in love, in
faith, in purity.
Rs. For in doing this you will save both yourself
and your hearers.

The prayers are recited by a leader:
Lord holy Father,
send us, we beseech
thee, laborers for thy harvest,
so that the Gospel of thy Son may
everywhere be preached
and his sacrifice everywhere renewed.
May the sacrifice
of the altar be to thy people so life-giving a sacrament
that it may gather to thy
table an abundant number of ministers,
to offer to thee on our behalf,
from the
rising of the sun even to its setting,
the pure oblation acceptable to thee
We beseech thee to increase,
by the communion of thy people in these sacred mysteries,
the number of their stewards among us,
and to make them holy in all that they do,
by the charity of thy Holy Spirit poured out
into their hearts.
Rs. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
O Holy Spirit of God,

Sanctify their hearts, that evil may not dwell within them.
O thou our God, be thou their guide.
